Abstract
Frozen transverse sections of the vastus lateralis muscles of 12 rats were reacted for reduced diphosphopyridine nucleotide tetrazolium reductase to ascertain the histological basis of muscle enlargement. Six rats were from lines selected for increased postweaning growth rate and six were from lines selected for decreased rate. Mean fiber diameters of high gain rats were larger (44.9µ) than those of low gain rats (38.9µ), P<.01. The total number of fibers measured was 4,900. The contribution, to muscle enlargement in high gain rats, made by histochemical type II fiber hypertrophy was greater than that derived from type I and intermediate fibers. Copyright © 1972.
