Self-Injurious Behavior in the Elderly

Abstract
Self-injurious behavior has been observed to occur frequently among the institutionalized elderly. A five-step intervention approach of Observation, Reflection, Intervention, Assessment, and Follow-up is suggested. Examples of the utilization of this approach illustrate the effectiveness of both individual humanistic treatment and behavior modification techniques in specific instances.
