Cleavage of Methyl and Benzyl Esters by Thiocyanate

Abstract
Growing attention is being accorded to nonsaponific cleavage of esters. Strong nucleophiles (LiI,1 RS, 2) have been exploited successfully to effect rupture of 0-alkyl bonds in methyl and a few other esters. As reagents of this sort are still quite limited, we felt that it may be of interest to provide some alternatives.
