Chemodectomas of the Middle Ear: A Comparison of Therapeutic Modalities

Abstract
Thirty-three cases of chemodectoma are presented, with patients staged in three groups: tympanic (1), tympanomastoid (2), and petrosal-extrapetrosal (3). Surgery is effective in group 1 cases.Surgery and moderate-dose postoperative cobalt irradiation (3,500 to 4,000 rads in three weeks) are used for more advanced lesions with higher-dose irradiation (5,000 to 5,500 rads in five weeks) reserved for very extensive tumors. Overall control of tumor in these cases is 84% in follow-ups from 1 to 31 years.
