Abstract
Cardiovascular and metabolic responses to specific alpha- and beta-adrenergic stimulation and blockade were studied in 8 patients. Selective beta stimulation with isoproterenol produced a rise in plasma FFA [free fatty acids] concomitant with its cardio-acceleration effect. Both of these responses were inhibited by proprano-lol, a specific beta-adrenergic blocking agent. Selective alpha stimulation with methoxamine increased arterial pressure but produced no metabolic changes. Alpha-adrenergic blockade with phenoxu-benzamine did not alter the responses to isoproterenol. These findings support the hypothesis that the adrenergic influence over the level of circulating FFA is mediated by the beta-adrenergic system. Structure-activity relationships of the 4 agents used in this study were discussed. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
