Abstract
The coupling efficiency between the fundamental modes of two different graded-index waveguides fabricated by ion exchange in the same glass substrate is calculated by numerical and variational methods. Waveguide parameters that allow the designer to achieve the maximum power transfer through the waveguide boundary are determined. A possible application to the design optimization of waveguide lenses is considered. Keywords
