Unstable intermediates. Part C. Urea and formamide: the radicals ĊONH2and H2NCONH

Abstract
At 300 K, both urea and formamide, on exposure to 60Co γ-rays, gave e.s.r. spectra characteristic of CONH2 radicals. The 13C hyperfine coupling confirmed that this is a σ radical, having a high spin-density on carbon. At 77 K urea gave a spectrum characteristic of the π radical H2NCONH, having a high spin-density on nitrogen. Possible mechanisms for radiation damage are outlined.
