Abstract
The effect of 5-HT [5-hydroxytryptamine] on the rat follicular rupture mechanism was studied by the administration of p-chlorophenylalanine (p-CPA) (300 mg/kg) at different stages of the ovarian cycle. The ovarian cycle and the histology of the tubes and ovaries were also studied in treated rats. Administration of p-CPA after 10 h of metestrus inhibits ovulation. Predominant diestrus in the ovarian cycle and luteinization of ovaries suggested an increase in progesterone secretion probably due to a corresponding greater prolactin secretion. Adequate 5-HT levels in the central structures are necessary for normal ovulation.
