Abstract
This study tests the utility of the concept of person-situation congruence in predicting the adjustment of old people to a new environment. The present report validates, over an interval of 8 years, prediction equations which were developed to account for the variance in adjustment at the end of the first year of residence. Terms in the prediction equation vary according to the criterion: resident's happiness, his acceptance by peers, and his adjustment to the living situation as rated by the staff. However, the equation developed for each criterion with short-run data also accounted for an appreciable amount of the variance in scores at the end of the 8-year interval. Therefore, while the bases for person-situation congruence must be specified according to the definition of adjustment which is the goal; the attributes conducive to short-run adjustment, by any one definition, tend also to be conducive to long-term adjustment according to that same definition. Keywords
