Abstract
A review of research concerning the gasteromycetous Nidulariaceae (bird''s nest fungi). The fruit body of Cyathus striatus is a specialized structure from which spores are dispersed by the splash action of raindrops. Similar rain-operated structures occur in many groups of plants other than fungi. Many Nidulariaceae have been cultured and fruited. All show 4-polar heterothallism. Many characteristics of cultures serve as adjuncts to taxonomic characters of herbarium specimens. Chromosomes of Cyathus are large and numerous (n = 12 for C. stercoreus). Several supposedly rare spp. have been found again, cultured and redescribed. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
