Abstract
Activity and disengagement theories do not reflect mutually exclusive processes. These processes operate on different levels (the personal level and the social structural level). High life satisfaction in the older person may be a combination of inter- and intra-personal activity coupled with structural disengagement. A study of retirement community in-movers reveals partial support for both theories. Keywords
