Abstract
To test the morphogenettc capacity of parts of the shoot apex of Trachymene coerulea after explanting from the subjacent tissues, explants of decreasing sizes, comprising different regions of the menstem, were made. Growth was on culture medium without exogenous growth regulators. The centre of the shoot apex produced fewer mature leaves and fewer embryos from the basal tissues than did the flanks when separated from any continuing influence from the subjacent tissues. This result is interpreted as due to physiological differences between the regions of the shoot apex. While regeneration from the flanks was greater than that from the centres, the latter can be regarded as morphogenetically competent and physiologically active. The lesser regeneration from the centres is regarded as the result of greater dominance over the basal tissues than that exerted by the flanks.
