Abstract
Diagnosis of a swelling in the neck can be an extremely complex problem and must be tailored individually by the physician who first sees the patient. Congenital and benign causes for these swellings do exist but malignant lesions must receive primary consideration. When metastases are found in the neck, one must continue to search for the primary growth either above or below the clavicles. Diagnostic technics and their advantages and limitations are discussed. Keywords
