Experimental Studies in Calcification

Abstract
This study deals with the effect of parathyroid extract on the dentin and pulp in the upper incisors of 10 normal and 27 nephrectomized rats. Large dosage of parathyroid extract in normal animals retarded the rate of dentin formation. Nephrectomy has previously been shown to accelerate the rate at which dentin is formed. Injns. of parathyroid extract to nephrectomized rats reduced the stimulating influence of nephrectomy on dentin formation. After injns. of parathyroid extract, ectopic calcification in the pulp was a regular occurrence. There calcifications were due to the focal tissue degeneration resulting from the toxic effect of parathyroid extract.
