Observation of Saturated Absorption of the 3.39 µm Line in an External CH4Cell

Abstract
Saturated absorption at wavelength 3.39 µm was observed with a CH4 cell placed outside a laser resonator, with the aid of an optical amplifier tube through which a laser beam of 25 µW/mm2 was amplified to 500 µW/mm2. The observation of amplification and saturation of the optical amplifier was compared with theoretical predictions, and good agreement was obtained. The observed broadening rate of the CH4 saturated absorption was (24.4±3.3) kHz/m Torr, and the geometrical broadening was (148±18) kHz/mrad.
