A Numerical Technique For Elastica Problems

Abstract
A numerical procedure is described for analyzing struts with large displacements by writing three simultaneous, first-order, nonlinear differential equations and using a shooting method to solve these equations. The algorithm developed can accommodate restraining springs on the strut, several imperfections occurring simultaneously, and variation in the cross section. Results obtained on a digital computer for selected combinations of effects and for the special case of a prismatic column are plotted.
