Abstract
In his charming book,The Search for Good Sense, Lucas dealt with four other Eighteenth Century characters: Johnson, Chesterfield, Boswell, and Goldsmith. I have taken you on one tour with Lucas. Here is another alluring introduction to the men discussed.The Art of Living, dealing with such wonderfully diverse creatures as Hume, Walpole, Burke, and Franklin, no doubt will throw some new light even for scholars familiar with the lives of these people; but mainly it will whet our appetite for more, expanding our interest in them and what they have done. I am sorry only that Lucas did not compare Jefferson with Franklin. These two towering figures among the founding fathers of the Republic were men of heroic proportions at a time in our history when heroes, if not quite a dime a dozen, appeared whenever they were needed, and they were all needed.
