Abstract
Electrical seizure activity induced by ECT [electroconvulsive therapy] in patients appears in 3 phases: phase 1 initial 18-22 Hz (.beta.-like) activity; phase 2 arrhythmic polyspike activity; and phase 3 rhythmic 2.5-3.5 Hz spike/polyspike-wave activity. With bitemporal ECT, phase 2 activity appears simultaneously in all leads. With unilateral non-dominant hemisphere ECT, there is an orderly march of phase 2 polyspikes from the right anterior temporal region. After termination of a seizure, there is symmetrical suppression of normal activity with bitemporal ECT but with unilateral non-dominant hemisphere ECT there is less suppression of normal activity in the unstimulated side.
