Photoinduced phase transitions in novel liquid-crystalline copolymers

Abstract
A novel liquid-crystalline copolymer containing non-mesogenic cinnamate ester photoactive units is described. Selective irradiation of thin films of this polymer leads to an isothermal phase transition from the nematic to the isotropic phase arising from the photoinduced compositional changes involving EZ isomerisation. The potential of spatial control of this effect is demonstrated by irradiation through masks.
