Factors Associated With Presence of Decubitus Ulcers at Admission to Nursing Homes

Abstract
Demographic and assessment data from almost 5,000 nursing home residents were used to identify patients most likely to have a decubitus ulcer at admission. Using multivariate analysis, it was found that older age, being male, nonwhite, unable to bathe, needing help transferring, being catheterized, experiencing fecal incontinence, being bed- or chairfast, coming from a hospital, and having no rehabilitation potential were significantly related to having a sore. These findings can be better utilized to identify residents entering with decubitus ulcers and to help target for early treatment.
