Abstract
The Rhode Island Pupil Identification Scale, a pupil-behavior-observation scale for use by classroom teachers in Grades K through 2, has been constructed. The items comprising the scale reflect statements used by teachers to describe learning problems children have in school. The present study was designed to investigate the factorial structure of the scale, to confirm the rationale underlying its construction, and to determine the number and nature of its dimensionality. 16 principal component analyses were performed on each administration of the scale separately for Parts I and II. Part I yielded five factors which accounted for an average of 67.8% of the total variance; Part II yielded four factors for an average of 69.0% of the variance. The authors offer their interpretation of the factors and conclude that the items on the scale appear to reflect the kinds of skills required of children as they progress through the Piagetian perceptual-motor levels to those of higher cognitive operations. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
