Influence of strychnine on classically conditioned defensive reflexes in the cat.

Abstract
CRs [conditioned responses] were obtained from 8 cats reinforced with unavoidable forepaw shock in consecutive sessions under subconvulsive doses of strychnine and saline. Number of CRs during reinforcement under saline was small, and there was no consistent tendency for their proportion to increase as the number of reinforcements increased. Under strychnine, there was a significantly greater (p = .02) average proportion of CRs, and their proportion increased with increasing number of reinforcement trials. Experimental extinction was obtained under both strychnine and saline. It is suggested that strychnine reduces behavioral inhibition during reinforcement.
