Abstract
During 1 yr, 768 patients.sbd.905 admissions, 342 with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), 563 with other diagnoses.sbd.were treated in the coronary care unit at Serafimerlasarette, Sweden. On admission, both the AMI and non-AMI group had significantly lower serum Mg levels than a reference group. The incidence of serious ventricular ectopic beats, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation on admission was significantly higher in the hypomagnesemic patients with AMI. Atrioventricular blocks and supraventricular bradycardia were more frequently observed in the hypermagnesemic patients, both in the AMI and in the non-AMI group. The incidence of atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia was higher in the hypomagnesemic patients.
