Abstract
1This is a report on work in progress. The author requests that readers treat the stage‐descriptions as provisional and as subject to revision based on the results of an extensive cross‐sectional and inter‐generational study he is undertaking in 1974‐75. To date the author and his students have conducted approximately seventy‐five interviews with children, adolescents and adults. The stages described here are based on analysis of those interviews
