Abstract
This paper is an attempt to survey the topic of User Interface Management Systems (UIMSs). We give a short account of the historical development of UIMSs, try to capture what is regarded as state of the art in the area, and examine the role of a UIMS in the process of software development. We also summarize several future research directions commonly recognized as important. Keywords
