Abstract
The role of cognition in direct practice is gaining increasing interest and application. Cognitive practice is not a new fad; rather, it is the product of the development of ideas about human thought that have been in the making for over three centuries. Current models of cognitive practice represent two different orientations to the nature of human thought-one mediational, the other phenomenological. It is shown that each model has distinct implications for the methods and outcomes of practice.Keywords
