Abstract
A case of cutaneous leishmaniaisis, presumably caused by Leishmania tropica, of unusually long incubation period has been reported. As, however, it is usually impossible to estimate the incubation period of naturally acquired leishmaniasis unless the patient departs from the endemic area, such long latent periods may not be as uncommon as appears from the literature. The patient probably acquired his infection in Vasto, Abruzzi, Italy. No previous record of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Western Australia can be found, but when a patient presents with a chronic papular or ulcerated lesion over an exposed part, the possibility of leishmaniasis should be considered in a country, such as Australia, which receives large numbers of new Immigrants, especially from Italy. Keywords
