Abstract
A simple theoretical explanation is given for the formation of systematic tension joints in sedimentary rocks. This theory shows that the frequency of occurrence of joints in a bed of rock is dependent upon the physical properties of the rock bed, the physical properties of the surrounding rock beds, the thickness of the rock bed, and the degree of tectonic deformation. Keywords
