Artificial Islands as Nest Sites for Common Loons

Abstract
Success-failure ratios of island vs. non-island nestings of common loons (Gavia immer) are determined. A technique for building artificial islands, their acceptance by loons as nest sites and loon territoriality are discussed. Islands are the preferred nest sites for loons, but neither territoriality nor hatching success increased with an increase in island number. Other environmental factors seem to play more important roles.
