Abstract
This paper considers the organization of health services in different occupational situations where there is contact with pesticides. Primary to health supervision is reliable and comprehensive knowledge on the toxicity of pesticides. A review of recent findings in the field of toxicity evaluation establishes that a complex of factors must be considered. Special reference is made to the influence of impurities, potentiation and antagonism, chemical interaction in air, and vehicles. The importance of clinical observation in pilot manufacture and field testing is stressed. At the work level generally applicable protective procedures include job analysis, changing work routines, training in safe work methods, industrial hygiene engineering for safe equipment, personal protective equipment and basic medical services. Finally, pesticide-contact occupations are outlined and an indication is given as to the nature of the type of health protection needed; the role of governments in this problem is dealt with briefly.
