Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in neonatal intensive care units. Here we review selected manifestations of NEC, risk factors involved in its pathophysiology as well as putative mechanisms associated with how an immature gut might be more susceptible to NEC. Treatment and potential preventive strategies are discussed. Keywords
