The Proteolytic Enzymes of Bacteria

Abstract
The peptidases of cell autolysates of 12 bacterial spp. were studied. Peptidases can be extracted from ceils by repeated freezing and thawing followed by autolysis in the presence of toluene. The peptidases of the aerobic bacteria resembled in general those of animals. Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Phytomonas tumefaciens contained leucyl-peptidase-like enzymes; Clostridium butylicum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Lactobacillus pentosus contained peptidases activated by reducing agents; L. pentosus and Pro-pionibacterium pentosaceum contained acidopeptidases. E. coli cultures contained more peptidase activity in the cells than in the medium; the opposite was true of B. megatherium.
