Accommodative Housing: Social Integration of Residents with Physical Limitations

Abstract
Social and spatial integration were examined among residents of a life care facility who varied in mobility status. Interviews documented opinions about use of public areas by the less mobile residents and observations recorded residents' behavior. Able residents reported more personal discomfort with wheelchair users than with residents who used canes or walkers. These reports were reflected in their spatial separation from, and low levels of interaction with, the less mobile residents.
