Abstract
This essay begins by describing the components and dimensions of the ideal of professionalism. It is then argued that in the bureaucratic context professionalism functions as an ideology that distorts reality and controls workers. These points are made specific through an analysis of the working situation of college and university faculty. Within the current fiscal crisis in higher education, professionalism becomes the false consciousness of faculty. Keywords
