Abstract
The energy levels and thermodynamic functions for a double minimum vibrational degree of freedom are presented, and their application illustrated for the case of ammonia. A simple formula is given for the range of validity of the classical expressions for rotational heat capacity and entropy. Also the symmetry number, which is troublesome in examples of double minimum vibration, is discussed briefly. Keywords
