THE RESPONSE OF THE ADRENAL CORTEX TO PSYCHIC STRESS AFTER MEPROBAMATE TREATMENT

Abstract
Acute meprobamate administration (45 mg of 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-l,3-propanediol dicarbamate per 100 g body weight) in adult albino rats significantly inhibits the adrenal ascorbic acid depletion (AAD) caused by psychic stress, but it does not prevent the depletion caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone administration. Meprobamate is capable of preventing AAD caused by psychic stress following 7 days administration but not after 14 days administration. The drug causes significant increases in absolute adrenal weights not only in intact rats but also in unilaterally adrenalectomized rats.
