Abstract
Unselected patients (101) with polycythemia-verawere reviewed with regard to rheumatic complaints. A clinical diagnosis of gout was made in 14 patients (9 men and 5 women). This is considerably greater than would be expected. The occurrence of inflammatory polyarthritis and degenerative joint disease did not differ from that in the general population. Taking 6 mg% as the upper limit of normal for serum uric-acid levels, hyperuricemia was found in 58% of the males and 42% of the females compared with an expected incidence of 4.6% in males and 1.26% in females, assessed for a population of this age distribution. Keywords
