Abstract
SUMMARY: A parallelism has been demonstrated between the extent of glucose metabolism via the pentose phosphate pathway and the biosynthesis of nucleic acids in the human placenta during gestation. In the first trimester of pregnancy, utilisation of the pentrose shunt is marked and the turnover of RNA and DNA is high. At term glucose metabolism via the pentose route is low and nucleic acid synthesis is much reduced. A similar relationship was demonstrated for protein formation. Keywords
