Hybridization of diploid and tetraploid cottons through in-ovulo embryo culture

Abstract
The Old World diploid cottons are incompatible with the New World tetraploid cottons. This incompatibility was circumvented when cross-fertilized ovules were cul tured in an in vitro system. Cultured Gossypium hirsutum ovules gave a high yield of hybrid embryos without phytohormones but G. barbadense, G. arboreum, and G. herbaceum required auxin in the culture medium to obtain adequate embryo yields. The in ovulo embryo culture technique provides a means to obtain interspecific cotton hybrids in quantity, thereby making the Asiatic cotton germplasm readily accessible to breeders of tetraploid cotton.
