Abstract
A 37-year-old Vietnam veteran developed “flashbacks” ten months after returning from duty. When he heard dogs barking, he would suddenly feel as if he were back in Vietnam. During a psychotic episode, he took a gun and was being chased in the woods by the state police, who were using dogs to find him. Upon hearing the dogs approach, he felt as if he were in Vietnam, about to be captured by the Viet Cong. As he vowed never to be taken alive, he shot himself. The relationship between spontaneous trance, dissociation and psychosis is examined.
