Evaluation of Dermal Patterns in the Diagnosis of the Down Syndrome by Predictive Discrimination

Abstract
Variations in dermal patterns have been reported between the sexes and among ethnic groups. The hypothesis that our diagnostic scoring method for Down syndrome overrides such variations was tested. A score composed from White American males was tested on individuals of both sexes from several ethnic groups such as Danish, Italian, Chinese and Blacks and Whites from the United States. No statistical differences were found among the mean scores of the control groups or among the Down syndrome patient groups. The classification of Down syndrome patients from nonpatients and vice versa was fairly uniform in all the groups tested. The discriminating power of the score is as good or better in these other ethnic groups as it was in the original samples from which the score was constructed, thus supporting our hypothesis.
