Abstract
Under extreme loads a stimulated muscle neither shortens nor develops tension. The heat production in a twitch is then rather less than one-half of its value with maximal shortening. Under such conditions the heat of shortening and the mechanical work are nil. The remaining heat, therefore, is heat of activation alone. It is about the same in magnitude and onset as the heat of activation at ordinary lengths. Keywords
