Abstract
Many attempts have been made to elucidate the mechanism of development of diabetic microangiopathy for determining the ways of preventing such complications or arresting their progression. In this complex disease several hemorheological factors have been incriminated, particularly blood hypercoagulability and increased blood viscosity. Low blood flow due to changes in the consistency of blood (hyperviscosity) seems with consequent development of obstructive lesions to play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic microangiopathy. A double-blind trial with Doxium® in 17 patients with diabetic retinopathy having abnormally high whole blood viscosity showed statistically significant tendency towards reduction in the viscosity measurements at 20 and 25 °C. These preliminary findings are discussed in connection with a possible mode of action of the drug. Keywords
