Toxocariasis in The Sudan

Abstract
Among 75 soil samples collected in Khartoum and Hilat Hamed only two contained demonstrable ova of Toxocara species, whereas eight of 25 samples collected in Juba were positive. The more humid climate of Juba is thought to favour survival of the ova in the soil as is the greater humus content in the soil of Juba. Significantly, one of the two positive samples in Khartoum was collected from a children's playground which was open to dogs—the public health implications of this is obvious. The low prevalence of ova in the soil in the Khartoum area is associated with absence of toxocaral antibodies at significant levels in a sample of the healthy Khartoum population, while the high prevalence of ova in the soil in the Juba region is associated with a correspondingly prevalent finding of toxocaral antibodies in the sera of local residents.This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
