Abstract
The depolarization ratios ρ n and the relative depolarized intensities i r of several liquids have been measured by Rayleigh light scattering. Experimental ρ n and i r values are in agreement with previous literature data. Existing theories give molecular polarizability anisotropy values (γ2 R) which are not in agreement with the values (γ2 K) obtained by static Kerr birefringence of non-polar liquids. The classical theoretical equations has been modified by using a suitable approximation of the local field and a consistent expression of the intensity scattered by density fluctuations, within the spherical model. The modified equations give a good agreement between γ2 R and γ2 K for the thirty seven nonpolar compounds investigated in the liquid state. Keywords
