Differential methods of family therapy in the treatment of alcoholism.

Abstract
The interactions of family psychodynamics and the dynamics of alcoholismic behavior are reviewed. It is suggested that alcoholism can adversely affect family system function and that dysfunctional family systems can promote and maintain alcoholism. The adaptation of family therapy techniques for alcoholism is discussed; methods of dealing with families in which the alcoholic is drinking or not drinking are described. A synthesis of methods from structural systems, psychodynamic and behavioral family therapy models is recommended. Four different types of alcoholic family systems are outlined, and the selection of different family therapy intervention strategies suitable for each type of system is discussed.
