Abstract
Parafoulbrood is a disease of brood of bees found only in limited sections of the South (U. S. A.). Several morphologically different bacterial forms occur in affected brood. The sporogenic form, Bacillus para-alvei, appears to hold the same relationship to parafoulbrood that Bac. alvei holds to European foulbrood. Bac. para-alvei shows marked variability and pleomorphism. Several variants were produced in culture by this organism. Some of these variants were isolated and stabilized. The writers are of the opinion that the evidence at hand points to a pleo-morphic bacterium, of which Bac. para-alvei is a stage in the life history, as the etiological factor in parafoulbrood. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
