Abstract
The continuing theme of Karl Mannheim's social theory is education for rational orientation in a changing world. The central strategy of that endeavor is a distantiation from oneself to gain a more comprehensive perspective. This approach evolved from Mannheim's early cultural sociology to its more political successor, the sociology of knowledge, and finally to the theory of planning. Keywords
