Abstract
Eleven patients received a 750 mg single dose of mefenamic acid during their 1st day of menstruation. Plasma PG[prostaglandin]E, PGF and P were determined before and 3 h after the medication. The dysmenorrheic symptoms were followed during a 4 h experimental period. Uterine resting pressure, frequency of contractions and also the active pressure decreased (slightly) about 2 h after mefenamic acid. Subjective relief of dysmenorrheic pain was coincident with the decrease in uterine activity. Mefenamic acid decreases the uterine activity of a dysmenorrheic patient and relieves the pain so frequently that it can be used clinically in the treatment of true dysmenorrhea. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
