Abstract
Various substituted benzimidazoles and imidazolo[4,5-b] pyridines 5a-c have been prepared by condensation of appropriate diamines and aldehydes in nitrobenzene. This method has been utilized to synthesize compounds 5f-h, which are analogues of the DNA binding fluorochrome Hoechst 33258.Keywords
